意味
悪いことの前兆が出たあと、次に起きる（だいたい悪い）出来事を予期して待つこと。
直訳
もう片方の靴が落ちるのを待つ
起源
20世紀初頭の米国アパート暮らしに由来。上階で靴が1つ落ちる音がすると、もう片方も落ちるはずだと待つ状況が比喩になり、次の（多くは悪い）展開を予期する意味に。
注釈
不安や緊張を含む言い方で、「悪いことが続く／次が来るはず」という予感。直接原因がある場合に使う。口語でよく使う。
