もとは楽譜なしで耳で音を取って演奏する比喩。そこから、物事を状況次第で柔軟に進める意味に一般化した。

📝注釈

「臨機応変で柔軟」という肯定的にも、「無計画・行き当たりばったり」という否定的にもなり得る。口語でカジュアル。ビジネスでも使うが無責任に聞こえない配慮が必要。

📘文法・使い方の注意点

英語では定型句で、通常 it を伴う（play it by ear）。動詞 play は時制変化可能。will/let’s/just などと共起し「様子を見よう」の意味で文末に置かれやすい。
