公表・報道しない前提で、非公式に内緒で話すこと。

報道・取材の慣習に由来し、公式記録（record）に載せない＝引用・公表しない前提で話すという意味になった。
注釈
主に取材・ビジネスで「引用・公表しない」「発言者を特定しない」前提。合意が必要で、相手が守る保証はない点に注意。
