意味
間一髪で、ぎりぎり間に合うこと。
直訳
時間の刻み目（ニック）のところ
起源
「nick」は刻み目・切れ込みの意。そこから「時間の刻み目＝正確な一点」を表し、「間に合うかどうかの瀬戸際の瞬間」という比喩になった。
注釈
「in the nick of time」でほぼ定型。「遅れる寸前に間に合った」安心感・危機一髪のニュアンス。フォーマルすぎず日常でよく使う。
