起源
元は「厚い／密集した所の中＝人混み・戦闘の中心」の比喩で、そこから「最も忙しい・緊迫した局面の渦中」を表すようになった。
注釈
「渦中」「真っ只中」「佳境」など。やや口語で、忙しさ・混乱・緊迫を強調。in the thick of + 名詞／in the thick of it（状況の真ん中）で使う。
