間一髪で、ぎりぎり間に合うこと。遅れれば失敗・危険・期限切れになる直前のタイミング。
直訳
時間の刻み目（ニック）の中で
起源
nick は「刻み目・切り込み」から転じて「正確な時点」を表し、in the nick of time は「まさにその瞬間に間に合う」の比喩として定着した。
注釈
「間に合ってよかった」という安堵や緊迫感を含む。遅れていれば失敗・危険だった含意。会話・文章どちらも可で、やや口語寄り。
