直訳
ぶどうの木（つる）でそれを聞く
起源
19世紀米国で、非公式な情報網を「grapevine（ぶどうのつる）」にたとえた「grapevine telegraph（うわさの電報）」が由来。内戦期の俗語として広まり、後に楽曲題名などでも定着。
注釈
「風のうわさで聞く」のニュアンス。情報源が非公式・不確かになりがちで、ゴシップ寄りにも使う。カジュアルな会話でよく使う。
