起源
もとは「上の位置の手が有利」という身体的な比喩（格闘・組み合い等）から発展し、英語では17世紀頃から「優位に立つ」の意味で定着した。
注釈
競争・交渉・議論などで「優勢になる」意。やや比喩的で一般的。完全勝利ではなく、一時的に有利になる場合にも使う。

文法・使い方の注意点
基本は「get/gain/have the upper hand」で固定表現。「over/on + 人」で「～に対して優位に」。時制は動詞で変化するが “the upper hand” は原則そのまま。
