悪事の現場を押さえる／証拠がある状態でその場で捕まえる。
直訳
（誰かを）赤い手のまま捕まえる
起源
スコットランド法で「血の付いた手（red hand）」＝犯行直後で証拠が明白、という発想から一般英語へ広がった表現。
注釈
「現行犯で」「まさにその瞬間に証拠付きで」捕まるニュアンス。口語でよく使う。軽い規則違反にも犯罪にも幅広く用いられる。
