（多くは悪い・重大な）知らせを初めて相手に伝えること。相手の反応に配慮して慎重に告げる含みがある。

起源
「break＝（沈黙などを）破って切り出す／明かす」の意味から、「知らせを切り出して伝える」という比喩表現として定着した。
注釈
丁寧に切り出すニュアンス。悪い知らせに多いが良い知らせにも可。相手への配慮や緊張感が含意され、ややフォーマル〜日常で使う。
