under your nose

Very close or directly in front of you, yet unnoticed or overlooked.

Based on the idea that the nose is at the center of your face; something “under your nose” is extremely close, so missing it implies carelessness or inattention. Common in modern English, often with “right.”

Often expresses surprise or frustration at overlooking something obvious and nearby. Common in speech; can sound mildly accusatory when aimed at someone.

  • The keys were under my nose the whole time—on the kitchen counter.
  • We searched for hours, but the answer was under our nose in the first email.
  • The suspect was under the detectives' nose, working in the same building.
  • Her talent was under our nose, but we never gave her the chance to lead.

Typically used as “under + possessive + nose” (under my/your/his nose). Often intensified with “right.” Can refer to physical objects or abstract facts; meaning is figurative.
