talk of the town

The person or thing everyone is talking about; a very popular or widely discussed topic.

From the literal idea of something being discussed all over a town/community; used since at least the 18th–19th centuries to mean the most talked-about subject or person.

Used for people or events. Can be positive (popular) or negative (gossip/scandal). Common in conversation and journalism.
