off the top of my head

From memory and without careful thought or checking facts; a spontaneous quick answer.

Recorded from the mid-20th century; it uses a body-part metaphor: the answer comes straight from your head (memory) without stopping to look anything up.

A common hedge meaning “without checking.” Often used to soften an answer and signal it may be approximate or incomplete.
