nothing to write home about

Not especially good, impressive, or noteworthy; fairly ordinary.

From the idea of writing a letter home only when something noteworthy happens; if it’s “nothing to write home about,” it isn’t worth reporting with excitement.

A mild, conversational way to say something is unremarkable or not as good as hoped. Not harsh, but it clearly withholds praise; can sound dismissive about people or their work.

  • I finally tried the new cafe downtown, and honestly, the coffee was nothing to write home about.

Usually used as a complement after forms of “be” (e.g., “It was nothing to write home about”). Also appears as a noun-phrase modifier (“a nothing-to-write-home-about movie”). Often with pronoun “it/that.”
