let it slide

To ignore or forgive a mistake/problem and not take action or argue about it.

From the literal idea of allowing something to “slide” past without stopping it; figuratively, you allow an offense or issue to pass without reacting or enforcing consequences.

Common, informal. Often implies a deliberate choice to overlook something (especially a minor mistake or offense) rather than address it.

  • He interrupted me at work, but I let it slide this time.
  • If you tell me why you missed the deadline, I’ll let it slide.
  • She let it slide when he made a snide comment and didn’t start an argument.
  • The teacher won’t let it slide if you turn in the homework even a day late.
  • I usually can’t let mistakes slide, but everyone was exhausted, so I let it slide.

Usually: let + object + slide (Let it slide / Let that slide). Past: let it slide (same form) or let it slide yesterday; can take objects like “his comment.” Not typically used in passive.

  • let it go
  • overlook it
  • brush it off
  • give it a pass
  • forgive it
  • call it out
  • hold someone accountable
  • take action
  • make an issue of it
