Currently being planned, developed, or prepared; in progress but not finished yet.

From “the works” meaning a factory/workshop/industrial plant. Something “in the works” was literally being made there; it later broadened to mean anything under development or preparation.

Used for projects/plans that are underway but not finalized. Neutral and common in both casual and professional contexts.

  • A new update is in the works and should roll out next month.
  • We have a few changes in the works to improve customer support.
  • Their second album is in the works, but they haven’t announced a release date yet.
  • Don’t worry—there’s a solution in the works for that bug.
  • The city says a new park is in the works for the east side.

Usually used predicatively: “It’s in the works.” Also with a noun: “A deal is in the works.” Common intensifier: “something big is in the works.” You can also use past tense: “was in the works.”
