get the message

To understand what someone means (often an indirect hint) or to realize a situation; also to receive information.

From the literal idea of receiving a message, extended metaphorically to ‘receiving’ the intended meaning, especially when it’s implied rather than stated.

Often means ‘understand the hint/implication.’ In questions like “Got the message?” it can sound pointed or admonishing. Can also be literal: receive information.

Commonly used as “get the message” (fixed article) or in questions “Got the message?” / “Do you get the message?” Can take an object meaning the implied point: “get the message (that …)”. Tense changes: got/gets/getting.
