drop a hint

To indirectly suggest or mention something so someone understands your intention without you saying it openly.

From the literal idea of “dropping” a small clue that someone can pick up. “Hint” has long meant a subtle suggestion; “drop” emphasizes casual, indirect delivery.

Mild, indirect tone. Used to suggest a desire or idea without stating it outright; often polite or playful, but can seem passive-aggressive if overused.
