caught off guard

Surprised and unprepared for something unexpected.

From the idea of being “off guard,” i.e., not in a defensive/ready stance. “Guard” comes from fencing/boxing and general vigilance; if you’re off guard, you’re open to surprise.

Common in conversation and writing. It implies surprise and lack of readiness, not necessarily a mistake. Often used for questions, news, reactions, or sudden changes.

  • I was caught off guard by her sudden announcement.
  • The team was caught off guard when the client changed the requirements overnight.
  • He looked caught off guard when I asked about the mistake.
  • We were caught off guard by the unexpected storm on our hike.
  • The interviewer caught me off guard with a question about my biggest failure.

Usually used as “be caught off guard” (passive) or “catch someone off guard” (active). Tense varies (was caught, got caught). “Off guard” is fixed; don’t say *on guard* here.
