break the mold

To do something in a new, unconventional way; to be different from what’s typical or expected.

From manufacturing/casting: a “mold” is the form that shapes identical copies. “Break the mold” metaphorically means not following the usual pattern and creating something distinct.

Usually positive: praises innovation or originality (a person, idea, product, or approach). Often used in business/creative contexts; not especially formal.
