as happy as a clam

Extremely happy and content; very pleased with the situation.

From the longer 19th‑century American phrase “happy as a clam at high water,” when clams are safer from being dug up; the shortened form “happy as a clam” became common later.

A friendly, informal simile meaning very content. Often used with be/look/seem; it sounds lighthearted rather than serious or formal.

  • Ever since she started her new job, she’s been as happy as a clam.
  • The kids were as happy as a clam playing in the snow all afternoon.
  • After we finally fixed the leaking roof, my dad was as happy as a clam.
  • He was as happy as a clam with a hot cup of coffee and a good book.
  • When I told her the good news, she looked as happy as a clam.

Fixed as a simile: typically “be/look/seem as happy as a clam.” Can take tense changes (was/will be) but the core phrase stays the same. Often used without “at high water” today.

  • delighted
